Downtown Concerts in the Park (commonly "Concerts in the Park" or "CIP") is a free, all-ages outdoor concert series held on Friday evenings at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Sacramento.[1][2] It is produced by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership and described as Sacramento's largest free outdoor concert series, blending touring national headliners with established local and regional acts.[2][3]
Founded in 1994, the series is Sacramento's largest, longest-running free music festival — the 2026 season marks its 33rd annual edition.[4][5]

What it is
Concerts in the Park is a weekly, free, all-ages concert series staged at Cesar Chavez Plaza in the heart of downtown Sacramento.[6][2] Shows run on Friday nights across a season that has spanned roughly early May through late July.[6][2][3] Each Friday features a multi-act bill, typically topped by a headliner and rounded out with several local supporting acts and a DJ set.[1][2]
Beyond music, organizers have positioned CIP as a broader "festival experience," with local food trucks, artwork, vendors and makers complementing the stage, and themed nights (e.g., Military Appreciation Night, Meet the Makers Night, Art Night, Neon Night, Emo Night Sacramento).[2][3] Events manager Sureena Johl described the goal as making CIP "the best local festival in town, every Friday in the park."[2]
Origins and purpose
The series was established in 1994 with a practical commercial purpose: according to the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, it was created as a vehicle to keep office workers downtown for an hour or two after their 5 p.m. workday ended.[9][10] Over three decades the series grew into what it is today — a community institution drawing tens of thousands of attendees per season.
Organizer and operations
The series is produced by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, whose events manager Sureena Johl spoke for the program in 2017 and 2018.[2][3] Johl characterized the booking philosophy as combining "national and regional talent" while "staying true to our community and providing a stage for our hometown favorites."[2][3] Information and lineups have been promoted via GoDowntownSac.com (later GoDowntownSac.com/CIP).[1][6][2] The 2016 season was presented by Bud Light.[6]
Format changes (2025–present)
Beginning with the 2025 season, the Downtown Sacramento Partnership updated the series format to reflect warming summers and an evolving downtown. The season was shortened from 12 weeks to 9 weeks, gates were moved from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and music now concludes at 9:30 p.m. rather than the previous 9 p.m. end time.[11][12]
Venue
The series operates at Downtown Plaza Park, 910 I St, Sacramento, CA 95814. There are two entrances: one at 9th & J Street and one at 10th & I Street. Free bike valet is provided courtesy of SABA at the 9th & J Street entrance.[7][8]

New themed nights introduced this season include Latin Night and Juneteenth Night.[16][17]
Role in the Sacramento scene
CIP functions as a recurring showcase that elevates Sacramento-area artists alongside national touring acts.[2][3] Lineups have repeatedly featured local and regional performers across the corpus, including Joy and Madness, Arden Park Roots, Ideateam, Element of Soul, Rituals of Mine, Drop Dead Red, The Nickel Slots and Who Cares.[1][6][2][3] Several acts appeared across multiple seasons (e.g., Joy and Madness and Arden Park Roots in 2015 and 2017; Rituals of Mine in 2017 and 2018; Cemetery Sun in 2017 and 2018), reflecting CIP's role as a regular platform for the local music community.[1][13][3]
The series has also hosted milestone moments for local artists: Who Cares chose its June 17, 2016 CIP performance as its farewell show.[6] National headliner Del the Funky Homosapien (of Oakland) was the subject of a 2017 Submerge interview tied to his June 9, 2017 CIP appearance.[13]
Local status is "na": Concerts in the Park is an event/series produced in Sacramento, not a touring or local artist, so the local-vs-touring distinction does not apply to the entity itself.
