EVENTFRIDAY NIGHT CONCERTSIN THE PARK

Friday Night Concerts in the Park (often shortened to "Concerts in the Park" or "CIP") is an annual free outdoor summer concert series held every Friday at Cesar Chavez Park/Plaza in downtown Sacramento.[1][2] By 2018 it was billed as "Sacramento's largest free outdoor concert series,"[3] and the Downtown Sacramento Partnership has since described it as Sacramento's largest and longest-running free music festival.[4]

The 2026 edition is the 33rd annual Concerts in the Park,[5] placing the founding year at 1994.[5][6]

At a glance

  • Free, all-ages weekly concert series held Fridays in summer at Cesar Chavez Park (also called Cesar Chavez Plaza) in downtown Sacramento.[1][7][3]
  • By 2025–2026, gates open at 6 p.m. and music ends at 9:30 p.m.[5][6] — a shift from the 5 p.m. start documented in earlier years.[2][3]
  • The 2012 edition ran 13 weeks, kicking off May 4, 2012.[2]
  • 2017 drew nearly 76,000 people across the series.[3]
  • A single 2012 night reportedly drew over 7,000 people for one performance.[8]
  • Programming pairs Sacramento hometown acts with internationally touring headliners, plus DJs in a beer garden.[2][3]

What it is

The series presents free, all-ages concerts on Friday evenings during the Sacramento summer at Cesar Chavez Park in downtown Sacramento.[1][3] Each weekly bill features multiple acts; from at least 2012 onward, lineups paired live bands with DJs programmed to play the event's beer garden.[2] Music starts at 5 p.m. and shows generally end around 9 p.m. in earlier years;[2][3] by 2025–2026 gates open at 6 p.m. with performances concluding at 9:30 p.m.[5][6] The event also functions as a broader festival experience, with local food trucks, artwork, local vendors, and beverages on site.[3]

The series has been a recurring summer fixture: it is referred to as an "annual" series in 2011[1] and recurred in 2012, 2013, 2017 and 2018 within the source span.[2][9][3] In 2018 it was described as returning to Cesar Chavez Plaza, indicating an ongoing run.[3] The 2025 edition was the 32nd annual, confirmed by Downtown Sacramento Partnership Executive Director Michael Ault.[6]

Origins and evolution

The series was originally conceived as a way to keep downtown office workers in the area after work, not as a music festival destination. According to Downtown Sacramento Partnership Executive Director Michael Ault, the concerts were established to "keep office workers downtown for an hour or two longer after they clocked out at 5 p.m."[6] This origin story is consistent with the early 5 p.m. start time documented in Submerge coverage through at least 2018.[2][3]

Over subsequent decades the series evolved. According to the Downtown Sacramento Partnership's official description, it "evolved from a battle of the bands meant for grabbing a beer after work with your co-workers" into "a rite of passage for Sacramento's musical talent and a true music festival."[4]

Editions and scale

  • 2012: A 13-week run that began May 4, 2012 at 5 p.m. The series was promoted as "the centerpiece of entertainment in Sacramento this summer."[2] Submerge reported that one 2012 night (in early May) drew over 7,000 people for Lite Brite's performance.[8]
  • 2013: Submerge noted the prior summer (2012) had seen "record setting attendance." The 2013 run began May 3 and continued weekly through July 26, with no show on July 5.[9]
  • 2017: Nearly 76,000 people attended across the series.[3]
  • 2018: The series returned to Cesar Chavez Plaza on Friday, May 4, 2018, running weekly through July 27 (no show July 6).[3]
  • 2025 (32nd annual): Starting with this edition, the series was shortened from 12 weeks to 9 weeks and shifted earlier in the season — running May through end of June — to avoid Sacramento's July heat and improve attendee safety and comfort.[6] Gates moved to 6 p.m., with music concluding at 9:30 p.m.[6]
  • 2026 (33rd annual): The series introduced Latin Night and Juneteenth Night as new themed programming nights, reflecting an expanded genre strategy.[5] Andrea Bejar headlined Latin Night; Kid Ink headlined Juneteenth Night.[5] The 33rd-year milestone places the founding at 1994.[5]

Booking and organizers

For 2012, booking shifted away from longtime promoter Jerry Perry; that year's lineup was instead assembled by a committee of local promoters, musicians and music enthusiasts operating under the name Play Big Sacramento.[2] Committee member Andy Hawk — who worked at Entercom radio stations and promoted Wednesday-night shows at Powerhouse Pub in Folsom — described the committee as working with venues, clubs, bookers and musicians to build a lineup of "the best Sacramento has to offer," with the most talented local DJs added to play the beer garden.[2]

By 2018, the series was associated with the Downtown Sacramento Partnership; its events manager Sureena Johl spoke for the series in a press release, framing it as attracting internationally admired artists while "providing a stage for our hometown favorites."[3] The organization has continued to present the series and describes it as Sacramento's largest and longest-running free music festival.[4]

Programming and notable performances

The series consistently mixed Sacramento-origin acts with touring headliners:

  • 2011: The Golden Ghosts (with Sacramento-tied member Justin Goings) were slated to play May 20 alongside Agent Ribbons and Roman Funerals at Cesar Chavez Park.[1] Agent Ribbons — described as Austin, Texas-based "by way of Sacramento" — were booked to headline that May 20 date.[10]
  • 2012: Headliners and acts across the 13 weeks included Arden Park Roots, Middle Class Rut, Nickel Slots, ZuhG, Oleander, Mumbo Gumbo, 7 Seconds, Lite Brite and many others, plus a roster of DJs for the beer garden.[2]
  • 2013: Headliners included !!! (Chk Chk Chk) on May 31, The Mother Hips, and Middle Class Rut, alongside local hip-hop (Rasar, Live Manikins, DLRN) and local heavy act Kill the Precedent.[9] !!! guitarist Mario Andreoni told Submerge the Cesar Chavez Plaza gig was one he was "most excited about," even compared to playing New York and Los Angeles.[7]
  • 2018: Headliners included internationally touring Franz Ferdinand and The Crystal Method alongside Sacramento acts Middle Class Rut, Peter Petty and Dance Gavin Dance; other billed acts included Mystic Roots, Del the Funky Homosapien, Peanut Butter Wolf and Rituals of Mine.[3]
  • 2026: Expanded genre programming introduced Latin Night (Andrea Bejar) and Juneteenth Night (Kid Ink) as dedicated themed evenings.[5]
