EVENTSACRAMENTO CONCERTS INTHE PARK

Concerts in the Park (CIP), also called Friday Night Concerts in the Park and Downtown Concerts in the Park, is a free weekly outdoor summer concert series held at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Sacramento.[1][2] Billed as "Sacramento's largest free outdoor concert series," it pairs internationally touring headliners with established and emerging local Sacramento acts across a multi-week Friday-night run each spring and summer.[2]

The series is in its 33rd year in 2026, placing its founding in 1994, making it one of Sacramento's longest-running annual summer events.[3][4] The Downtown Sacramento Partnership bills it as "the city's longest-running free music festival."[5] According to the Downtown Sacramento Partnership's official website, CIP has evolved from "a battle of the bands meant for grabbing a beer after work with your co-workers into a rite of passage for Sacramento's musical talent and a true music festival."[6]

At a glance

  • Venue: Cesar Chavez Plaza, downtown Sacramento (through at least 2018);[1][7] Ali Youssefi Square (910 I St, downtown Sacramento) by 2026.[8]
  • Format: free, all-ages, Friday nights, roughly 5–9 p.m.[1][2]
  • Organized by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership; Sureena Johl served as events manager (2017–2018).[1][2]
  • Mixes "touring national artists and established local bands."[1]
  • 2017 series drew nearly 76,000 people over its run.[2]
  • Documented seasons in this corpus: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2023, 2026.[9][10][1][2][11][12]

Format and logistics

CIP runs as a weekly Friday-night series at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Sacramento, with all shows free and all ages welcome.[1] In 2017, music ran from 5–9 p.m.; the 2018 announcement likewise noted music starting at 5 p.m. and shows wrapping around 9 p.m.[1][2] Each Friday typically featured a multi-act bill — generally four to five acts, often closing with a DJ set.[9][1] Seasons typically skipped the Friday nearest the Fourth of July (no show on July 5, 2013; July 3, 2015; July 6, 2018).[9][10][2]

By 2017 the event had expanded beyond music into a broader "festival experience," incorporating food trucks, local vendors, artists and makers, and themed nights such as Art Night, Meet the Makers Night, Military Appreciation Night and Neon Night.[1][2] Events manager Sureena Johl of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership described an aim to make CIP "the best local festival in town, every Friday in the park."[1]

Organization

The series is produced by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, with Sureena Johl identified as events manager in both 2017 and 2018.[1][2] Information for the series was directed to the GoDowntownSac.com website (including a GoDowntownSac.com/CIP landing page).[1][2] Live Nation was credited with a "Backstage VIP Package" presentation on one 2017 date.[1]

Venue

Through the documented Submerge seasons (2013–2018), the series was held at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Sacramento.[1][7] By 2026, the listed venue had shifted to Ali Youssefi Square — formerly Saint Rose of Lima Park, which was officially renamed in October 2019.[8][13]

Documented seasons

  • 2013: Friday series running May 3 through July 26 (no show July 5), with headliners including !!! (Chk Chk Chk) — playing shortly after the release of their record THR!!!ER — The Mother Hips, and Middle Class Rut.[9] Submerge noted record-setting attendance the prior summer (2012).[9]
  • 2015: Series kicked off Friday, May 1, at Cesar Chavez Plaza and ran through a July 24 season finale, spanning country, hip-hop, post-hardcore, punk, indie-rock and reggae bills.[10] Headliners/notable acts included Blackalicious, Mr. T Experience, Slaves (the new band of Jonny Craig), From Indian Lakes and Arden Park Roots.[10]
  • 2017: Ran Fridays from May 5 through July 21.[1] Headliners included Rituals of Mine (formerly Sister Crayon), Del the Funky Homosapien, Mad Caddies and R.LUM.R; the series was described as "a seriously legit blend of touring national artists and established local bands."[1] This season drew nearly 76,000 attendees.[2]
  • 2018: Returned Friday, May 4, through July 27 (no show July 6).[2] Headliners included internationally touring acts Franz Ferdinand and The Crystal Method alongside Sacramento acts Middle Class Rut, Peter Petty, Dance Gavin Dance and Rituals of Mine.[2]
  • 2023: Ran Fridays May 5 through July 28 at Cesar Chavez Park, with headliners including Blue October, Eric Bellinger, Kat Dahlia, and Sacramento natives Rain City Drive.[12]
  • 2026: Held at Ali Youssefi Square; the season introduced new themed nights — Latin Night and Juneteenth Night — representing an expansion of genre programming beyond prior formats.[3][8] According to Sacramento Press, Events Manager Amelia Chew stated: "we're incredibly excited to expand our programming for Concerts in the Park this season with our Latin Night and Juneteenth Night."[3]

Role in the Sacramento scene

CIP functions as a recurring showcase that places nationally touring headliners on the same series as Sacramento-area artists, giving local and regional acts large free-audience exposure.[1][2] Johl framed the series as attracting "internationally admired artists like Franz Ferdinand while staying true to our community and providing a stage for our hometown favorites."[2] Numerous artists recur across multiple documented seasons — for example Arden Park Roots (2013, 2015, 2017), Joy & Madness (2013, 2015, 2017), Element of Soul (2013, 2015, 2018), ZuhG (2013, 2017), Middle Class Rut (2013, 2018) and Rituals of Mine (2017, 2018) — underscoring CIP's role as an anchor of the local live-music calendar.[9][10][1][2]

Submerge regularly previewed CIP performers in feature interviews, including Oakland hip-hop legend Del the Funky Homosapien ahead of his June 9, 2017 headlining set, and local power-pop band Sunday School ahead of their June 30, 2017 appearance.[14][7]
