Lyrics Born is the stage name of Tom Shimura, a Japanese-American rapper, singer, and producer. Born in Tokyo in 1972 and raised in Salt Lake City before settling in Berkeley, he met DJ Shadow and the members of Blackalicious while attending UC Davis, and together they founded the influential SoleSides label, later Quannum Projects. Originally performing as Asia Born, he took the name Lyrics Born in 1995. His debut solo album, Later That Day (2003), was later named one of Rolling Stone's "200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time." He is also one half of the duo Latyrx and continues to record and tour.
