Tonight in Sacramento — Friday, June 26

Friday night in Sacramento ends a 33-year tradition for free downtown — and that's just the marquee. From a reggae-rock institution closing Concerts in the Park to funk at the Shady Lady, here's every room worth being in tonight.

Some Friday nights you pick a show. Tonight you pick a lane, because the city is running a free reggae-rock send-off, a stadium-sized dance headliner, a Bay Area rap anniversary, and a sweaty funk set in a downtown saloon — all on the same evening. Here's where to be.

The marquee — free, downtown

Arden Park Roots — Concerts in the Park, closing night. Cesar Chavez Plaza, gates 6pm, free, all ages. Sacramento's own reggae-rock institution — going since 2007, three-time SAMMIE winners, Sacramento Music Hall of Fame — closes the 33rd season of the free Friday series they once set the all-time attendance record for. A free park show is the most Sacramento thing there is; a band that drew the biggest crowd in the series' history coming back to end it is the city telling you who it belongs to. If you do one thing tonight, do the free one. (We ran a full deep-dive on the band this week — worth reading alongside.)

The big rooms

Kaskade — MoonPay X Games League. Cal Expo, 7pm. The Grammy-nominated house mainstay headlining the X Games League weekend — the largest single sound in town tonight, and a very different crowd than the park.

Kamaiyah — "A Good Night in the Ghetto" 10-Year Anniversary. Ace of Spades, 7pm. The Oakland rapper runs her breakout 2016 mixtape back a decade later. A Bay Area classic, one freeway over, on its anniversary tour.

The locals & the late sets

Big Sticky Mess — Shady Lady Saloon. 9pm. Sacramento funk, early-'70s-inspired and built for a late room — a local favorite playing one of downtown's best back bars. This is the after-the-park move.

Saving Seattle — Free Friday at The Boardwalk. 8pm, all ages, free. The Boardwalk's free all-ages Friday — the room where the next wave of the scene cuts its teeth.

DJs Within × Enchi × Reakper — The Press Club. 9pm. Late-night DJ sets in the Press Club's small, loud back room for whoever's still going after midnight.
